To the American Indian: Reminiscences of a Yurok Woman
Published in Paperback by Heyday Books (October, 1991)
Authors: Lucy Thompson, Peter E. Palmquist, and Julian Lang
Average review score:

The Yurok account of North America beginning 8,350 BC.
"The traditions handed down say that the land north of Redwood Creek, where it goes into the ocean, extended far out into the sea to the large rock that is now known to the white people as Redding Rock." The base of Redding Rock lies 50m beneath the sea. The last time Redding Rock was on dry land was in 8350 +/-200 BC [9600 BP].

This very early date means that Lucy Thompson's Yurok tribe has occupied the Klamath River Valley for over 10,000 years. Her 1916 narrative is the oldest American history of any sort, and could be the oldest anywhere on earth. Lucy's descriptions extend even further back, "to the Age of Giants, when large animals roamed the earth."

"From the land of Cheek-cheek-alth, the mystic Eden of long ago, came our wandering tribe of people, who long since inhabited North and South America." This ancient name still exists, now pronounced Chechen-Aul, near Grozny, after which Chechnya was named.

"Our part of the people traveled on until they reached their final earthly home on the Klamath River, which we call Health-kick-wer-roy; and here we found the white race, Wa-gas."

This is a stunning statement! The Yuroks were preceeded by a white tribe! "These white people were found to inhabit the whole continent, and were a highly moral and civilized race."

After 1000 years of peaceful coexistance, the Wa-gas migrated out of North America back "to the land of their birth, in the far north, the valley of Cheek-cheek-Alth, .. the same land as ours." They built dugouts and paddled north along the coast, to Japan, then across Siberia, retracing the route used by the Yurok, back to Chechnya. This migration resulted from a catastrophic tsunami that obliterated the entire Mississippi Valley and most of their civilization in 7130 +/-50 BC [8160 +/-50 BP].

A unique description of early America and Europe by a brilliant tribal historian.

Tomahawk Revenge

WORLD SERIES
The Wilderness series, a collection of 39 books thus far in my library, is compatible to the world series of baseball. It's the ultimate in the real old west as I dreamed they would be if I had been lucky enough to have lived in those great days of hardship, darring, danger, adventure, independance and many more adjectives that explain how life was back in the 17 and 18 hundreds. No Doctors other than the erbs you could learn to use if you were lucky enough to become a friend of a friendly Indian tribe such as the Shoshones. The fifth story in this series has all of the excitement you want to experience. A gread read.

Tools for Environmental Management: A Practical Introduction and Guide (Conscientious Commerce)
Published in Hardcover by New Society Pub (December, 2002)
Authors: Dixon Thompson and Lisa-Henri Kirkland
Average review score:

A useful toolkit
This is the first book that I have seen to compile a practical toolkit for managers who are working to improve environmental management and sustainability of their operations. It is presented as 'work in progress', is very comprehensive in its identification and coverage, with a set of 22 linked tools. It is designed for reference rather than to be read as a book, and fills a very important gap in the management literature.
The 22 linked tools are in various stages of development and the authors cover both how available tools should be used and what remains to be developed. For example the chapter on environmental indicators covers both the current state of the art and a frank discussion of current problems.
A notable feature of the book is the quality of the listing of further reading and available Internet sites at the end of each chapter. My only regret is that the authors have not provided a complementary website with at least those references listed.

Tower to the Sun
Published in Hardcover by Knopf (April, 1997)
Author: Colin Thompson
Average review score:

Our children's inheritance superbly crafted.
Colin Thompson is a craftsman in both word and thought, 'Tower to the Sun' is a feast for the eyes and the soul. Imagination runs rampant while reality raps nervously on your sensibilities. In a world of darkness this is a story of a immensely rich man and his adoring grandson who decide to build a tower through the man-made smog so that each may feel the sun on their face. It is a vision of one real possibility facing the future generations and a warning of this generation's carelessness with the environment. A joy to read over and over again with pictures that reveal something new at every viewing. Children will delight at the endless variety and adults will marvel at the intricacy and depth to the story telling.

Trail of an Artist-Naturalist: The autobiography of Ernest Thompson Seton (American Biography Series)

A Story of a Life and a Time That Will Never Be Again
This is the life story of a man who lived a life that few would-be animal lovers could only dream of living. His minute observations of the various animals that he came to know very well during his life, ranged from birds and rabbits, to a wolf-killing pet dog (really!) . This man lived with all these animals and developed insights into the very reasons they do what they do. His temperament and abilities ranged from being a fairly good artist on one hand, to being at the opposite extreme, probably the greatest trapper/hunter who ever lived. The reader of this book will (if they get nothing else out of this) learn or understand more about the wild animals and domesticated animals of the world that we live with. And some that no one will ever live with again. Since this is an old book that retells a life lived almost a century ago, this book is about a way of life or survival that does not exist now. This book is real. Not a ficticious idea of what things are or the way things happen. I read this book originally 30 years ago, and still remember it vividly today.

Travel and Routine Immunizations
Published in Paperback by Shoreland Medical Marketing (March, 1998)
Author: Richard, Dr. Thompson
Average review score:

The best all-in-one vaccine reference for nurses nationwide.
Dr. Thompson does a stellar job in creating a simple yet informative reference for travel and routine immunizations. This text is a must for health care providers who have limited time yet want to stay current on the latest recommendations for administering vaccines. Contraindications, legal recording requirements, adverse event reporting, and a resource directory are also covered. The text amazingly combines the ACIP Recommendations, AAP Red Book, ACP Green Book, and CDC Yellow Book all in one handy reference that's easy to understand. If there is any one single text to own on immunizations, this is it. Updated annually and far less expensive than maintaining other medical reference texts on vaccines makes this an the best deal in medical literature. With the ever increasing importance of vaccines as a form of medicine, this book is certain to become a staple of nurses and physicians nationwide. The Treatise on Laws (Studies in Medieval and Early Modern Canon Law, Vol 2)
Published in Paperback by Catholic Univ of Amer Pr (April, 1994)
Authors: Gratian, Augustine Thompson, and James Gordley
Average review score:

A foundational work in the development of modern law
The Decretum or Harmony of Discordant Canons is a compilation of extracts from Church councils, Church fathers, and other ecclesiastical authorities. Compiled in the first half of the twelfth century by Gratian, probably a monk and teacher of canon law at the famous law school of Bologna, it remains one of the most important collections in the history of law. The first 20 sections, translated in this work, comprise a treatise on law in general and contain a discussion of the nature of law, voluntary action, and the power of popes, bishops, and secular authorities. Accompanying the text of Gratian is a translation of the so-called "Ordinary Gloss," a commentary on the text that took its final form in the 13th century and was usually found around the margins of the text, just as it is presented here. An introduction places the Treatise in its historical context, notes critical difficulties, and explains the methods of those who commented on it. This is the first English translation of a sizable part of the Decretum and will be of great interest not only to scholars and students of Church law, but also to students of secular law, theology, philosophy, history, and political theory.

Truth v. Justice
Published in Paperback by Princeton Univ Pr (15 September, 2000)
Authors: Robert I. Rotberg and Dennis Thompson
Average review score:

Essential for anyone researching truth commissions
The book contains pieces by noted academics such as Amy Gutman, Martha Minow and Kent Greenawalt, providing a reasonably through overview of the moral issues surrounding truth commissions. The book tries to pose and discuss questions such as "Do truth commissions sacrifice justice for pragmatic reasons?" and "Can truth commissions be justified by appeals to non-retributive theories of justice." Almost all of the essays are well written, and on the whole the book provides an excellent introduction into the theory behind truth commissions, though it focuses almost exclusively on the South African model and generally ignores commissions in Latin America and Europe. Although a number of the essays cite historical events, the book lacks pieces describing the actual formation and work of South Africa's Truth Commission; nor does it contain any primary documents. However, most of the relevant documents are easily accessible on the web, and their absence does not seriously detract from the book.

The book is solidly aimed at the academic realm; those wishing for an easy-to-read, general introduction to truth commissions should probably look elsewhere. However, I highly recommend this book as a general reference and for students and scholars seriously interested in the theoretical underpinnings of truth commissions.
